At its 13rd meeting held in Edinburgh in July 2000, ICD (the International Congress of Dietetics) decided to hold its 15th meeting in the City of Yokohama, Japan, in 2008. The hosting of the ICD meeting in Japan was a long standing dream of Japanese dietitians. In fact, in the past, the Japan Dietetic Association (JDA) had failed twice to invite ICD to Japan.
The Japan Dietetic Association particularly its International Affairs Division, is currently preparing for the 2008 Yokohama meeting.
The ICD meeting is held every four years as a program of the International Confederation of Dietetic Associations (ICDA) which has been organized by the dietetic associations of its member countries. The ICD meeting is the largest international one in which a large number of dietitians participate from abroad. At the meeting, the participants discuss on, and exchange views on matters such as knowledge, technology, education, training, role and activity for dietitians from the international perspective. In other words, ICD is a forum which aims at discussing the results of practical studies made by dietitians themselves from the international perspectives, but does not merely report on the basic research into dietetics. Japanese people experienced a shortage of nutrition for a time after World War II, and are encountering the problems of excessive nutrition today. I hope that Japanese dietitians will be able to propose a very interesting program on the basis of experiences from these nutritional problems in Japan for a successful Yokohama meeting.
The Japan Dietetic Association will be making necessary arrangements such as poster-design, holding lectures, staff-training, and fund raising. JDA will also take action to recruit volunteers from among those who have the experience of studying, working or living abroad, and who take an interest in foreign languages and/or international meetings. It is also important to arrange host-families for participants from abroad.
The Yokohama meeting will be held for several days between August and September 2008. The City of Yokohama is well known as a unique and attractive international city of Japan. It is a city where the final game of the 2002 World Cup Soccer Tournament under the joint sponsorship of Korea and Japan is expected to be played. Furthermore, the 2008 Olympic Games is to be held in Beijing, China. Many participants to the Yokohama meeting may have a chance to visit Beijing to enjoy the Games on their way to or back from Japan. JDA hopes that as many dietitians from abroad as possible will attend the Yokohama meeting. |
