The meeting of International planning Committee of ICDA (International Committee of Dietetic Associations) was held in Tokyo from 20 to 25 November, 1999 with the attendance of its seven members from abroad including Japan. Prior to the meeting, on November 20 symposium on, Activities of Dietitian and Nutritionist Around the World was held in Chiba Prefecture near Tokyo.
This symposium was planned and hosted by the Japan Dietetic Association with the following objectives;
| (a) |
To exchange information and views on the activities of dietetic experts in each member country in order to train young dietitians, and |
| (b) |
To maintain and promote the friendship and international insight among the participants through such exchanges. |
The symposium was also intended to attract wider attention to the 13th conference of the International Committee of Dietitians (ICD) to be held in Edinburgh, Scotland, in July 2000.
At the symposium, the speakers from Canada, Ireland, the Republic of the Philippines, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States of America made a 20 minutes speech on the dietetic activities of their own countries. We were sorry the ADA could not join the symposium; therefore the ADA sent us a speech message. They reported that their countries have been facing such problems as excessive or insufficient intake of nutrients, while maintaining their traditional dietary habits, and dietetic experts have been discussing what role can be played to tackle and solve these problems. It was very useful for Japanese participants to know the facts that, many countries have been facing dietetic problems and working to find solutions for them Japan as well.
The symposium was very successful. About 400 Japanese dietitians attended the symposium, and positively participated in the discussion. The Japan Dietetic Association expressed its sincere appreciation to all the guest speakers for their kind understanding and cooperation. The speakers as well were deeply impressed with the first attempt of holding the symposium and expressed their gratitude to its fruitful results. Many Japanese participants said that they had a good opportunity to know the present dietetic situations of each country and learned many ways of promoting dietetic activities. The Japan Dietetic Association admitted that it was a significant and meaningful forum as a means of promoting the friendship among dietetic experts of the participating countries and of exchanging information. Many guest speakers suggested that similar symposium be held from time to time in order places in the future to contribute to promoting more strengthened ties between dietitians in the world. |
